JOEY BURKHART
Fun, inspirational young man
The Buzz Justice Memorial Fund was established in honor of one of our boys with XXYY Syndrome who passed before his time. Buzz was a sweet and loving young man and an artist. He was a complete joy to his family who miss him very much.
When Buzz's mother came to find the XXYY Parent Network, she was in search of answers concerning his medical problems, which included colon cancer. While there is no documented evidence that colon cancer is related to XXYY, we were unable to say with certainty that it is not related to XXYY.
The fund was created as part of the XXYY Project for the purpose of assisting families who are experiencing extraordinary medical circumstances and to aid families in traveling to research site locations.
Our dream with the establishment of the Buzz Justice Fund is to ensure that no parent or male with XXYY Syndrome will find a lack of information about illnesses associated with XXYY in the future.
Joey Burkhart was 13 years old when he passed away in late 2006 from a rare disorder called TTP (Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura). We are fairly sure that TTP is not related to XXYY, but it is something that we will now be watching for in research studies.
Joey was a really fun boy. Because he liked so much to bring joy to others, The XXYY Project has established a fund in Joey's honor called "The Joey Burkhart Fun Fund," at the request of his mother. Grants will be made from this fund to boys with XXYY who want to participate in a fun activity such as summer camp.
